Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue

It’s a superstition that still holds in modern weddings; that a bride must arrive at her wedding day with something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. These kind of rituals are charming and sweet and add a certain old-world tradition to the occasion. What’s more, the little rhyme presents something of a fun design challenge to the modern bride-to-be, a whimsical touch to the more serious decisions she has to make in the lead up to the day. Here, we feature four unique ways that modern brides are fulfilling the tradition…

Something Old

A popular way to fulfil the quote for ‘something old’ is for brides to wear an antique piece of jewellery. Brooches, earrings and rings are great choices, as these can be incorporated without having a huge impact on the overall look of the gown. Another way in which brides choose to honour the tradition is to wear their mother’s or grandmother’s veil or garter. A lot of women hold on to wedding gowns and accessories for generations, and if you are lucky enough to have a piece handed down to you, it can add a beautiful nostalgia to your entire wedding day look.

Something New

Most brides consider their gown to be the ‘something new’ that they need, but with more and more brides choosing vintage or re-worked gowns, there’s a growing need to be a little more creative. Never-worn jewellery purchased or made especially for the occasion is a popular choice, but if you’re looking for something a little more creative, a growing trend is for brides to have a freshly minted coin from the year of their marriage stitched into the underside of their gown. It not only acts as their ‘something new’, but can be a memento for decades to come.

Something Borrowed

This one is usually fairly easy to fulfil, and the best chance to borrow that beautiful hairpiece or pendant you’ve been eyeing off on one of your friends for years. Borrowing something to wear on your wedding day can also be quite a special way to include someone in your wedding who may have missed out on being part of the bridal party.

Something Blue

From garters to underwear, sapphires to blue hair-pieces, brides have been incorporating that little bit of wedding day blue in their looks for years. The overwhelming trend at the moment, however, is for brides to wear blue shoes. It’s modern, fun, bold and just a little bit cheeky…everything this year’s bride should be!

Weddings are shrouded in traditions–some of which the modern bride shirks, but others she happily embraces. ‘Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue’ is a tradition that, while trivial, is a sweet way to acknowledge the long history of the institution being entered into. Not to mention a great way to customise your wedding day look!
